Of the three iconic sites in the Golden Circle, Gullfoss is probably the most impressive. Huge cataracts occur where the high plateaus drop sharply to the flat coastal strip. The highest waterfall, which is also the furthest downstream, fills this gorge with spray, sometimes crossed by a rainbow. In fact, two very wide falls, at an angle to the course of the river and perpendicular to each other, have carved out a narrow gorge 70 m deep. A true natural wonder, a must-see on your first visit to Iceland.
