To cross the island from south to north (and vice versa), there are only two tracks. The best known is F35, the Kjölur trail, and F26. This uninhabited region of central Iceland lies between the Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers. It is crossed by the F26 road. Both are only accessible in summer, generally from mid-June. Its name comes from the word sprengja, which means "to exhaust", as the few people who once dared to cross this area did so as quickly as possible, certain that it was populated by trolls and elves and therefore dangerous. The trail passes at the foot of Tungnafellsjökull, a glacier rising to 1,520 m.
