Between Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður, Álftanes lies at the tip of a small peninsula. Its 2,500 inhabitants seem happy to live in the countryside, yet are very close to the city (a twenty-minute drive from the capital). It's a model small town, surrounded on all sides by lakes, beaches and bays. From here stretches a long peninsula largely made up of meadows and marshes. Little-known by tourists, it's an ideal place for a pleasant bike ride or a few hours' excursion. In winter, it's also a great spot for hunting the northern lights.
