Þingvellir literally means "plain of parliament" in Icelandic. It's one of the country's most extraordinary sites, combining natural beauty and historical interest, and it's only logical that it should be included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Geologically, Þingvellir lies on the mid-Atlantic ridge, marked by a network of faults and a 7 km-widegraben running northeast-southwest. So, in just a few minutes by car (or on foot), you can switch from the North American plate to its Eurasian neighbor; these two tectonic plates diverge here by 2 cm/year!
