The Þjórsádalur, "valley of the Þjórs", is crossed by Iceland's longest river in a changing landscape of lava peaks, pseudo-craters, birch woods and black sands. Beyond the Þjórsárdalur, the F26 Sprengisandur trail crosses the inhospitable highlands to the north. Sprengisandur was once reputed to be a den of outlaws and social outcasts. The trail is only accessible by 4×4 vehicles and usually opens in early July. Please note that there is only one filling station at Hrauneyjar, to the south of the track. Make sure you fill up properly and bring your own reserves.
