Located on the northern shore of the lake, the tourist centre of Mývatn is concentrated around the Reykjahlíð hotel and the church. In the shadow of the menacing Krafla, the locals like to recall that in 1729, lava flows from this volcano largely destroyed the village, but stopped at the foot of the church, which miraculously was not destroyed. Don't worry, the last eruption was in 1984. Today, it is a peaceful village in which many tourists stop while discovering the region and the lake. There are small shops, restaurants and hotels as well as natural baths to relax in.
