Kópavogur was once all hills and stones. The first census dates back to 1703, when Pall Vidalin and Arni Magnusson counted six farms in Kópavogur. The town was one of the main locations for the local parliament, which resolved disputes and handed down judgments. It wasn't until the 1940s that the population grew considerably. The 1950s were a time of great change, and from 1970 to 1990, major construction projects were undertaken to accommodate the population. Today, the town is home to several thousand inhabitants and offers a wide range of facilities.
