The national park covers the tip of the peninsula and surrounds Snæfellsjökull, the "snow mountain glacier". This glacier, which covers a now-extinct strato-volcano, gave its name to the park and the peninsula. Snæfellsjökull is considered to be Iceland's most beautiful glacier; on a clear day, its 1,446 m summit is visible from Reykjavík. The glacier's surface area has shrunk to just 10 km² since the end of the 18thcentury, when global warming began. The park is ideal for a variety of hikes, offering a wide range of landscapes.
