The little "town under the glacier" has a long history as an important trading center with continental Europe and the British Isles. In 1687, the King of Denmark, Christian V, authorized the town to trade. Previously, smuggling had flourished, and the Danish authorities had great difficulty enforcing the kingdom's monopoly. The population grew rapidly during the 19th and 20th centuries, from 92 inhabitants in 1801 to over 1,000 today. As the region's busiest port, it remains dependent on fishing resources and their processing.
