Grundarfjörður is a small fishing village of 910 inhabitants on the northern shore of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, surrounded by the impressive Helgrindur, the "hell ridges", whose peaks are around 900 m above sea level. Originally, the settlements were clustered in Grundarkambin, near the Grund farm and the Kvíabryggja wharf, where docking was easiest. In fact, Grundarfjörður is one of the best harbours in Snæfellsnes. At the beginning of the 19th century, a number of French people settled in the town, before leaving in 1860. Today, Grundarfjörður is twinned with the Breton town of Paimpol.
