Reggio Emilia, an industrial and commercial center, was founded in the 2nd century B.C. by the Roman consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, who gave his name not only to the city(Regium Lepidi) but also to the Via Emilia, which he had built. Reggio Emilia belonged to the Este family from 1409 to 1776. With the arrival of Napoleon, the city was incorporated into the Cisalpine Republic (1797). It was here, as indicated by the tricolor banner under the arcades of the Palazzo Comunale, that the national flag of Italy was flown for the first time in 1797 and is kept in the town hall. Ignored by mass tourism, Reggio Emilia has a small and pleasant historical center.
