For a long time a provincial town, Sabbioneta became in 1544 the fief of Vespasiano Gonzaga (1511-1591), who decided to transform the place into an ideal city in the shape of a hexagonal star, with streets oriented according to the 4 cardinal points, with houses divided into 30 identical blocks. He breathed an intense cultural life into his court, which earned him the title of Little Athens, a destiny however without continuation at the death of the benefactor. From this golden age, the walls and the urban fabric today bear witness to a model of a perfect city according to the canons of the Renaissance architects. A site now classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
