The only Tuscan city-state to retain its independence between 1160 and 1805, Lucca has preserved its 16th-century urban character, thanks in no small part to its centuries-old fortifications. As soon as you enter, you lose track of time. There's something magical about summer evenings in Piazza Napoleone, where families and tourists mingle and all generations come together as one. There's always a cultural event to celebrate the city's rich past, as well as its present, including classical music. In fact, Lucca was the birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini in 1858.
