It was the first free commune in Emilia. Between 1539 and 1746 it was the seat of the principality of Gonzaga, who restructured it according to the theory of the "ideal city". In the main square you can find the town hall, the palazzo Ducale, commissioned by Ferrante I, the church of San Pietro and San Paolo (1575) and the Duomo, rebuilt in the 19th century. The arcades of Via Garibaldi and the ancient synagogue are worth seeing. The Maldotti Municipal Library is located in the former Jesuit convent. It has a collection of over 100,000 books, coins and paintings. In addition, the dike on the Po (late 17th century) is a pleasant walk.
