Of the imposing castle of Canossa, only evocative ruins remain, perched on a rock. The castle belonged to Matilda, Countess of Tuscany, a great devotee of the Church, who for thirty years fought against the Emperor and in favor of the Pope during the Investiture Quarrel. The beautiful remains of the castle of Canossa, the well-preserved fortress of Rossena and the castle of Quattro Castella, also in good condition, remain from this period. It was in Canossa in 1077 that Emperor Henry IV waited for three days in front of the castle, in the freezing cold of January, for the pardon of Pope Gregory VII.
