Carpi owed its prosperity to its strategic location along the road to Mantua and to the Pio family who governed it from the 14th to the 16th century and undertook major town-planning works, transforming Carpi into a Renaissance-style city. In the heart of the town, Piazza dei Martiri is lined with arcades and contains Palazzo Pio with its chapel, inner courtyard and apartments, the 16th-century Cathedral of the Assumption and the neoclassical-style municipal theatre. Not far away is the Church of the Sagra and its high 13th-century bell tower. La Sagra was given a Renaissance façade by Peruzzi in 1515.
