On the right bank of the Panaro, Nonantola is famous for its Benedictine abbey, founded in 752 by Anselmo, a Lombard duke of Friuli, who had given up court life to devote himself to meditation and prayer. In addition to this masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, Nonantola has a small pedestrian center organized around Via Roma, lined with stores and restaurants. The town still has some historical buildings, such as the two medieval towers known as dei modenesi and dei bolognesi (which houses a civic museum). Not far away, the Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo is a church whose origins date back to the ninth century but which has been refurbished in the baroque style.
