South of Florence, Pistoia has a long history of conspiracy, from Catilina, Cicero's enemy, to the quarrels between white and black guelphs before the Renaissance. The town is said to have given rise to the French word "pistolet", a double-bladed dagger used by the locals. Pistoia also appears to be the origin of the French word "bistouri", via the medieval Latin pistorensis, used to designate a type of knife made here (in Italian pistolese). Despite this name and this sharp object, "Little Florence", Italy's Capital of Culture in 2017, is a fabulous city to discover.
