Bergamo is an extraordinary sight for the first-time visitor. Seen from the plain, the Upper Town, surrounded by walls, towers and bell towers that split the air, seems to have emerged from a mirage. For years, Bergamo, on the border between the Milanese duchy and the Republic of Venice, was a wealthy and elegant city, locked in its traditions and palaces. Today, Bergamo has two faces: the Upper Town, the historic core, and the Lower Town, the modern extension. With its wide avenues and contemporary buildings, Bergamo continues to live in the present. Together with Brescia, Bergamo has been named Italian Capital of Culture for 2023.
