Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg, beautifully built on a meander of the River Havel. With 193,000 inhabitants, it is the only major city within easy reach of Berlin. In fact, it's inseparable from it, integrated into the functioning of the metropolis. In the past, Berlin naturally extended southwards towards the "Potsdam islands". The German partition drew a line between West Berlin and Potsdam. Today, however, the wound is closing and Potsdam is once again a hub of the Berlin conurbation, even its "rich suburb". Green and full of fascinating sites, it's also lively and academic. It's a must for Berlin tourists. Comparable to Versailles for Paris, this is the city of Sanssouci Palace, the former summer residence of the Prussian sovereigns, a rococo jewel boasting one of Germany's most beautiful parks. Well connected to Berlin by S-Bahn, it's a favorite weekend destination for Berliners, with its charming center, parks and lakes.
