Petit Futé's opinion on NEW PALAIS

Vintage plate 2020

Situated to the west of the park, 1 km from Sanssouci Castle, the "New Palace" stands at the end of the driveway, imposing and majestic. Built between 1763 and 1769 to celebrate the victorious power of Prussia after the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), it is the last and largest Baroque palace in Potsdam. It was designed by the architects Büring, Manger and Gontard. The palace was never a main residence, its function being more representative: it was used by the king as a secondary residence for holding large receptions and receiving guests. Frederick II occasionally occupied his apartments in the south-east wing of the castle (which you can only see on a guided tour). Not to be missed, the Rococo lounge with its shell decorations or the Marble Gallery.

Left abandoned after the king's death, the palace was only reused in the 19th century by Frederick III and Princess Victoria. It was here that the emperor was born and died. He reigned for only 99 days between March (after the death of his father William I) and June 1888, a year which was called the Year of the Three Emperors (Dreikaiserjahr). The palace is inhabited by his son Emperor Wilhelm II and Princess Augusta. Innovations such as elevators and bathrooms date from this time! Opposite the palace there are two buildings in the same style, the communal areas, i.e. the kitchens, servants' and guards' rooms, now belonging to the University of Potsdam.
