In 1170, the Archbishop of Magdeburg sent monks of the Cistercian order to Zinna to found a monastery. In 1226, the abbey church was consecrated. Over the years, the place became more and more prosperous. Most of the buildings you will see here date from the 14th and 15th centuries. They are typical of the brick buildings of northern Germany with their stepped gables. In the 18th century, Frederick II founded the town of Kloster Zinna around the abbey. Unfortunately, the king had part of the abbey buildings destroyed in order to use the building material to build a new weavers' village.
