This small town in Brandenburg is home to a major historical site: the Kloster Lehnin monastery, representative of Northern Gothic red-brick architecture, is well worth a visit. Legend has it that the Margrave of Brandenburg Otto I (of the Ascanian dynasty) fell asleep at the foot of a tree while hunting. In his dream, he was disturbed by a deer, which he interpreted as a pagan symbol, prompting him to build a building to evangelize Slavs who had not yet adopted Christianity. This legend also explains why Kloster Lehnin became the burial place of the Margraves of the House of Ascania.
