It is the capital of the state. With a population of 478,000 inhabitants, it straddles the mainland and the island of Santa Catarina, connected to the country by the 800 m Hercilo Luz bridge, one of the symbols of the city. Floripa, as its inhabitants affectionately call it, is a large metropolis with little interest for tourists, but you can visit an interesting colonial centre, stroll through the shopping streets and soak up the friendly atmosphere of the city market. The handicraft market in the "casa da alfandega" is worth a visit. There are also good restaurants to dine in, but the interest lies elsewhere, on the island of Santa Catarina.
