Praça XV is the very heart of Florianópolis. It was here that the bandeirante Francisco Dias Velho founded the city in 1662. It is without doubt the city's most beautiful square. It is embellished by a park featuring a majestic, century-old mango tree. Paved in the old-fashioned style, pleasant and shady, it lies at the entrance to the network of pedestrian streets that structure the city's historic center. Here you can admire the yellow-and-white catedral metropolitana, built in the 1920s to replace the city's original chapel.
