It is the second oldest city in the state, located on an island facing the lagoon. Founded in 1626, it became in 1839 the capital of the Juliana Republic, a separatist movement of the state defended by Giusepe and Anita Garibaldi, after the Farrapos War. Laguna, 124 km south of Florianópolis, is located at the southernmost point of the demarcation line established in 1494 by the Treaty of Tordesillas between the Spanish and Portuguese possessions. There are very cheap pousadas. The city centre still has some historic houses. The beaches of the south, less urbanized, are often inaccessible by rain. Bus from Florianopolis .
