Built where the Itajaí-Açu River meets the sea, the city of Itajaí is located on the northern coast of the state of Santa Catarina. Colonized by the Portuguese in the 18th century and by the Germans in the 19th century, the city has always been oriented towards the sea and navigation. Today, Itajai houses one of the biggest port complexes in the country. The port of Itajai is the second largest container port in Brazil and the largest export port for frozen meat in Brazil. Itajaí is also home to the international headquarters of the world's largest canned food company. Little interest for visitors.
