The town of Bruay-en-Artois has changed its name and face many times... A priori, Bruay would mean "the city on the water", like Bruges or Brussels in Belgium. The Lawe river runs through the town. The history of Bruay really began in the 18th century, when coal deposits were discovered: the first pits were dug in 1854. Mining gave the town a real boost. Today, Bruay-la-Buissière is a flowery town, the result of a beautification policy that aims to improve the development of neighborhoods and rehabilitate the sites formerly occupied by mining facilities.
