In 1837, Alphonse Daloz bought the Le Touquet estate, a dune complex on which he planted more than 800 hectares of maritime pines. A few years later, his friend Hippolyte de Villemessant, founder of the Figaro newspaper, was charmed by the place, which he nicknamed "The Arcachon of the North", and convinced him to make it the capital's seaside resort, which he undertook with the participation of the Englishman John Whitley. The new town, initially located in the commune of Cucq, became Le Touquet-Paris-Plage in 1912. It has always claimed this vocation as a place of relaxation for the Parisians. Golf, racecourse, tennis, luxury hotels and prestigious residences are installed there from 1904. Le Touquet was a field of experimentation for young architects who knew how to reconcile fantasy and respect for the natural environment. Until the 1930s, some prestigious buildings flourished, such as the town hall and the post office, the racecourse stands, the covered market, the Canche lighthouse and the Casino de la Forêt (now the Palais de l'Europe). 16 villas, now listed, illustrate the Touquet style of architecture at the time. The plots of land being narrow, it is on a vertical plan that these luxurious villas were built.
The forest environment, the proximity of Hardelot to the north, the protected natural site of the Pointe du Touquet and other beaches to the south make a stay in Le Touquet exotic and invigorating. The possibilities of beautiful walks are numerous and diverse, whether in the forest or in the dunes of the beach. Every summer, its beach welcomes thousands of tourists who enjoy the fine sand and, in winter, it hosts the famous motorbike race, the Enduro du Touquet, known as the Enduropale since 2005!
Its interest in all kinds of sports has never waned, as shown by the many sporting events that take place there throughout the year, the many quality facilities available in the town and the many people who practice sand yachting, golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing, motor sports, etc.
One of the most dynamic seaside resorts in France, Le Touquet-Paris-Plage offers all sorts of cultural, sporting and leisure activities and events throughout the year.
