Gargenville's name has two origins: the Gallo-Roman translation of "Gargen farm" or its creation by the Franks. In 845, the Normans razed the village, which came under the protection of Hanneucourt castle. In the Middle Ages, the town grew thanks to its trade links with Meulan. In the mid-19th century, the arrival of the railroad gradually transformed the village. Beneath the town lies a 2 km long gallery, the result of limestone quarrying. Situated on the banks of the Seine, Gargenville has preserved its village atmosphere, with stone houses and several washhouses.
