Situated on the banks of the Seine, Épône is now divided into three districts: the town center, on the old Quarante-Sous road leading to Normandy; Velannes, an area of cereal and market-garden crops; and the residential district of Élisabethville, a mecca for the bourgeoisie in the early 20th century. In the 14th century, the town suffered the ravages of the Hundred Years' War and the English invasion. It was also the site of the drafting of the very first French Constitution by the town's last lord, Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles, before becoming the site of the Constitution of theFifth Republic, in June and July 1958.
