Traditionally called Guy, the Lords of La Roche gave their name to the place. The route of choice to get to the village is that of the Route des Crêtes, an aerial route overlooking the Seine at the top of the hill. Nestled in the hollow of the cliff with troglodytic habitats, the castle dates back to the Viking incursions at the beginning of the 10th century. It is crowned by a 12th century keep; from its summit, the breathtaking view reveals a strategic position, on the Franco-Norman border. The French-style vegetable garden, the town hall, the forest and its arboretum are also detours not to be missed. Today a peaceful commune of about 500 inhabitants, on the border with Normandy, La Roche-Guyon is labelled "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and deserves it.
