A strange name for a village! Ivry-la-Bataille refers to the Wars of Religion and the famous battle won by Henri IV on March 14, 1590, against the Catholics of the League of Paris led by the Duke of Mayenne. Today, this small town is best known for the archaeological excavations, resumed in 2007, at the fortified castle, the remains of which dominate the town. This is one of the oldest Norman stone fortresses, built in the 10th century, and one of the most powerful of its time. For the record, the architect Lanfred had his head cut off by Alberède, who feared similar construction elsewhere.
