A small, unspoilt village built entirely of stone, Chérence owes its charm to its unique geographical location: it nestles atop a plateau overlooking the Seine by some 120 meters! It's right next to the beautiful Route des Crêtes, which leads down to La Roche-Guyon. Chérence boasts a fine heritage: Saint-Denis church (12th and 16th centuries), Calvaire de la Petite-Croix (13th and 15th centuries), the former priory of Bec (12th century)... Under the impetus of Nathalie Sarraute, who settled here in early 1900, the village attracted a number of intellectuals in search of tranquillity. Today, fourteen different nationalities still live here!
