A true medieval gem, Montchauvet is perched 81 m above sea level on a limestone promontory, from which it takes its name. The village is surrounded by two rivers, the Vaucouleurs and its tributary, the Ru d'Houville. In the early 12th century, the land was granted by Louis VI to Count Amaury III de Montfort to build a castle - later dismantled by Charles V. Montchauvet, a fortified town at the gateway to Normandy, played an important role during the Hundred Years' War. The ruined keep, the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, the Porte de Bretagne and the Pont de l'Arche all bear witness to the town's past.
