In the Middle Ages, Mantes - spelled without an "s" until the 17th century - played an important defensive and political role. In 1087, William the Conqueror entered the town by surprise and destroyed all but the castle. In the 12th century, Louis VI le Gros incorporated the county into the royal domain, before Philippe Auguste made it a châtellenie and granted it new privileges. After the 16th century, the town gradually lost its role as a stronghold, but continued to prosper thanks to its river position and industrial development. After the Second World War, it was rebuilt and officially renamed Mantes-la-Jolie in 1953.
