Aubergenville lies at the junction of the Mauldre valley to the west and the Seine valley to the north. A small rural village on the slopes of the Val de Seine, it grew with the arrival of the railroad line in 1843. Its origins date back to the 4th century B.C., when agriculture was distinguished by the size and importance of its vineyards. Two sites bear witness to prehistoric settlement: one on the Montgardé promontory overlooking the Mauldre River, and the other close to the river with the "dolmen de la Justice" at Epône. Three castles once stood here: de la Garenne, d'Acosta and de Montgardé.
