Chavenay, from the Gallic cavannos ("clearing of the owl"), was built on the banks of the Ru de Gally, which runs through it from east to west. The commune has two localities: La Sucrerie, linked to the village center by the business park created in the 2000s; and Le Bois Saint-Fiacre, a former hamlet of Montilly, which evokes the vanished church dedicated to the saint. In the past, the village was renowned for its quarry, from which was extracted the solid "pierre de Saint-Nom", used in the construction of the Orangerie, the Petit Trianon and the 100-step staircase at the Château de Versailles. Today, all that remains is a winch in the open field.
