Situated on the border between the Parisii and Carnutes tribes, Fontenay lay in the Yveline forest. In the 11th century, Benedictine monks cleared the land, while lords acquired land in Haut-Fontenay to create their fiefdoms. Sacked during the Hundred Years' War, the village was also ravaged during the Wars of Religion. After a period of calm, the area became part of Louis XIV's vast hunting grounds, surrounded by a forty-kilometer wall. The village remained part of the Versailles estate until the French Revolution. In the 19th century, the town grew thanks to industrialization.
