Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche takes its name from the bishop Saint Nonne and Bretesche (from the Celtic breit eiche, "big oak"), a nearby wooden fortress. In the 13th century, the Vaux-de-Cernay monks founded the Saint-Nom farm here. In 1700, Château de la Bretèche, fiefdom of the de Pomereu family for over two centuries, was sold to the Count of Toulouse, who installed his hunting crews here. The village is home to a famous golf course that hosts the annual Lancôme Trophy, as well as a forest to which it owes part of its name. It comprises five hamlets: Saint-Nom, La Bretèche, Valmartin, La Tuilerie-Bignon and Le Vallon.
