In Gallo-Roman times, the first quarries for moellons, soft limestone used to build walls, were built on this territory. In 1668, "sous Poissy" was added to the name "Carrières", before disappearing and reappearing again and again in registers and maps until 1832. A small, modern town with a varied landscape on the banks of the Seine, Carrière was once a Mecca for the inland waterways industry: in the past, you could admire the fish-filled pond, with its floating fishermen's cottages. Carrière was also a stronghold of agricultural activity in the Yvelines, with its vast market-garden plains.
