In the 9th century, the Médan estate was a possession of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The town is best known as the home of Emile Zola, who bought a house here in 1878 and hosted his "Médan Group" of naturalist friends and authors: Paul Alexis, Marius Roux, Léon Hennique, Henri Céard, Huysmans and Maupassant. In fact, Zola was responsible for the town's name, spelled with an "é", which he liked better! The Château de Médan, built in the 15th century, was frequented in the 16th century by Ronsard, du Bellay and many of the Pléiade poets, and was the home of Maeterlinck from 1924 to 1938.
