Triel-sur-Seine is a small commune perched on a hillside, on one of the loops of the Seine where three islands once stood - probably the origin of its name. Philippe Auguste built a château here, of which only a few sections of the surrounding wall remain today. Legend has it that James II, the last Stuart king, also deposited treasures here, taken from England after his flight in 1689. The charm of its countryside attracted writers and poets in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1970, it was the observatory that established the town's reputation, with the opening of Europe's first Parc aux Etoiles in 1991.
