On the southern edge of the Vexin region, the commune encompasses an island in the Seine, the Ile de Vaux, and is crossed by the Ru Gallet. The seigneury of Vaux was owned by the Counts of Meulan, La Roche-Guyon and Vion. Exploited for their gypsum wealth until 1980, the town's subsoils contain numerous tunnels that partially undermine the Hautil forest. At the end of the 18th century, an earthenware and later porcelain factory was built on the Forvache plateau. There are 4 historic monuments in the area: the Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church, the Pavillon d'Artois, the "La Martinière" villa and the Château de Vaux.
