Meulan-en-Yvelines was occupied by Gallic tribes from 400 BC, before becoming a river port. From the 10th century onwards, the county of Meulan - situated between Normandy and the royal domain - grew in importance, and a castle, bridges and ramparts were built. The town's development was ensured by trade, crafts and tolls, which brought in regular income. The town also suffered during the Hundred Years' War: captured by Du Guesclin, its fort was destroyed. The municipal territory encompasses two islands in the Seine: Ile Belle, extended by Ile de Mézy, and Ile du Fort.
