The Gauls who lived there transformed their village into a stone town - hence the name Les Mureaux (from the Latin Murelli, wall). In the Middle Ages, the area was a fief of the county of Meulan. In 1843, the arrival of the Paris-Rouen railroad brought new industrial development to the town. In 1924, the town made sporting history by hosting the sailing event at the Paris Olympic Games. In the 1950s, the town was transformed to accommodate new residents who had come to work at the Renault-Flins factory. An urban renewal program led to the creation of the Molière eco-district, the largest in France.
