Welcome to the gingerbread capital! In this former Empire village, this sweet has been known since 1453, thanks in particular to the Cistercian monks of Marienthal who used to eat it during Christmas celebrations. The reputation of Gertviller's gingerbread became so important that, in the 19th and 20th centuries, it was to be found in all the markets and village festivals of the region. In the 1900s, there were 8 or 9 manufacturers in the village. Today, there are only two: Fortwenger, which opened its Gingerbread Palace in 2009, and Lips, which created the Gingerbread and Alsatian Folk Art Museum in 1998.
