Chief town of a seigniory in the Middle Ages, then chief town of a canton during the French Revolution, Barr flourished in the 19th century thanks to the leather and textile industries. The Degermann tannery still supplies leather for major international brands. Since 1906, Barr has hosted Alsace's oldest wine fair in mid-July. In summer, musical Thursdays at the Protestant church are very popular. A charming market in the pedestrian zone brings together local producers and craftsmen. A geological trail begins at Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and leads up the slopes of Mont Sainte-Odile, past the Mur Païen and Landsberg castle.
