Situated at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile between vineyards and forest, this village is the starting point of superb hiking trails marked out by the Club Vosgien. Available at the town hall, leaflets specify the itineraries to reach the Landsberg castle, the Pagan Wall and the Mont Sainte-Odile. If its wine fame goes back to the 3rd century, Heiligenstein is especially famous for its tasty klevener made from the pink Savagnin grape variety, whose cultivation is only allowed in the commune and a few neighbouring villages. Initiated in 1742 by the mayor Ehrardt Wantz, this very special wine is honoured for a whole weekend in August.
