The village of Avapessa lies on a hillside overlooking the Regino plain, at an altitude of 250 m above sea level. The village's olive-growing tradition is still very much alive, with olive trees dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Since the 1970s, the village has been modernizing, moving towards controlled, environmentally-friendly tourism development. The restoration of the parish church of Sainte-Marie, the chapel of Saint-Michel and the renovation of numerous cobbled streets have enhanced the village's rural setting. This village is an example of a Corsican commune that has managed to reconcile modernization, tourism and respect for the environment.
